In this essay the Author, Lee, basically tells the the story of her mother who only speaks a little English and mostly Korean.  By the end of the article her mother had been through a troublesome day from the Korean word for oxtail, and why someone would want to eat oxtail is beyond me, to getting honked at by other motorists, which can be kind of annoying at any rate.  In some ways I feel sympathy towards Lee’s mom, yet on the other hand I don’t and for good reason.

I sympathize for the main reason that no one should go through that kind of humiliation and embarrassment.  In one way or another we all have embarrassed ourselves to the point where we just want to go and cry off in the distance, which is understandable.  In that same respect people should be understanding in that circumstance in order to make the other person feel at home.

On the other hand, she needs to learn English, especially in these times.  English is essential in getting by in America, because in order for people to understand you, you need to be on the same frequency.  Also America that won’t give a damn about where you’re from half the time, or how well you’ll integrate into society.

Finally the last thing about this article that I am going to point out is that she tells us that her mom dies of cancer.  In my personally opinion she didn’t need to put that, because it’s an attention grabber for the wrong cause.  She writes an essay about how bad it is getting by in America with out knowing any or little English, then she caps it off with, “oh by the way she died of cancer”.  I guess she put that tidbit of information in there was mainly to aspire more sympathy, and in my book that is a low blow to the reader’s conscience.

Good way to express how you feel about this article I think you wrote more of a response then the article was long. I agree that the article is about her mother who speaks little to no English but can speak great Korean. I have no clue why anyone would want a oxtail but maybe its a Korean thing. I do agree that English is essential in American because that is what everyone speaks, her mom should have not gotten embarrassed because she should know what to aspect so in America. I agree she didnt have to put her mom dying of cancer in the passage but it did spice it up a little. She did kind of make it more of a sorrow story then just a basic story of her mothers English troubles. Anyways good response to a not so interesting article.

I agree that the author’s mother should learn English if she wants to get by in America. It is sad that the butcher just looked at her and got a different order after he realized she couldn’t speak English, but I’m sure the guy was busy and might have had no time to waste in trying to figure out what she was trying to order. To get by in America you need to be able to communicate and most Americans know only English so although the story is sad at times, she needed to learn English.

First of all, the author is a he, not a she. And second of all, it was oxtail bones that she asked for in the butcher shop. It is used for a very popular and nutrient rich soup that is made by boiling the bones in water for a long period of time and then it becomes a rich broth. Making this soup consumes so much time and effort that it can take days. And besides, don’t other countries eat dishes that may seem rather unpleasant to foreigners too? For example, the French with their snails ( les escargots) and Australia with their kangaroos ( which by the way is their national animal). So tell me which one is worse? But overall, I just wanted to say that we should have respect for other nations and their culture, which is what this essay is about.

First of all Thank you for your input. Secondly I really don’t care because that was a for a class I took last year, and I’m just amazed at the fact that people have actually viewed this page since then. Thirdly I do hold a certain amount of respect for foreign customs, but I also believe that there is a time and place for everything, and on top of that if someone wants to live in America then they better learn English or have enough money to hire a translator. However I am sorry that I mixed up the gender on the author.

Thanks again for the input and have a nice day :)
